Clueless: Americans unsure about 4th of July importance

NEW YORK (WABC) -- This is the 101st July 4th parade on Staten Island, the city's biggest and oldest, but not everybody knows why July 4th is so important.

Most of us learn at a very early age that America declared its independence in 1776 and from Great Britain. But, a new poll shows a lot of Americans just don't know.

76% answered correctly when asked from which country the U.S. declared its independence. 19% weren't sure. 5% named another country.

When Staten Island resident, Michelle Walsh, was asked if she knew which country we declared independence from she said, "Uhhhh, France?"

Regarding when the U.S. declared its independence, 58% got it right, 26% weren't sure and 16% named another date.

When asked which year U.S. got its independence, college student Loren Lemberg replied, "1492?"

No- Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492.

The vast bulk of older people at this parade got it right. It was the young ones who had trouble.

The history lesson of sorts was amusing, but the Mayor called it "sad".

"It is sad that Americans forget that, maybe they never learned, they forget the sacrifice that was made," Mayor Boomberg said.

That sacrifice came from people like Joe Pepe, a Vietnam vet. He knew the answers and wished everyone did.

"It's important to me, it's important to everybody that fought in Vietnam, it's important to anyone who fought in any war," Pepe said.
