Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- More older people than thought may be having heart attacks. "Silent" heart attacks occur without classic symptoms like chest pain.
Researchers in Iceland did heart scans on more than 900 elderly people.
17% showed signs of having had an attack, though one had never been diagnosed.Symptoms of a silent attack may be as mild as dizziness and nausea.
Unrecognized heart attacks can be almost as deadly as the symptomatic ones.
Of the 157 study participants that had unnoticed heart attacks, 44 died within eight years.
