For the first time, more Americans are in favor of same sex marriage, than against it.
The Gallup Poll, conducted nationwide earlier this month, found 53 percent of Americans support giving gays and lesbians the same legal right to get married as heterosexual couples.
According to the poll, 45 percent of voters, mostly Republicans and older Americans, are still opposed. That's a 9-percent shift from last year.
The margin for error was four percent.
Gallup's polls have tracked attitudes toward legalizing same-sex marriage each year since 2004.
