Ann Romney's plane makes emergency landing

AP  Eyewitness NewsDENVER -- A plane carrying Ann Romney, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's wife, made an emergency landing Friday afternoon after smoke filled the cabin. No injuries were reported.

An apparent electrical fire forced the detour on the flight from Omaha, Neb., to Los Angeles, campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said. The candidate and his wife spoke immediately after the incident, said Saul, who shared photographs on Twitter of firefighters boarding the private jet.

Rick Gorka, a spokesman traveling with Mitt Romney, said Mrs. Romney told her husband that everyone was fine.

Secret Service spokesman Max Milien in Washington said there were no injuries on the plane and everyone deplaned after the 2:25 p.m. local time landing. He declined to provide other details.

Romney was in Nevada, appearing at a fundraiser and rally on Friday. He did not mention the incident during a rally, but aides said he spoke to his wife from a car on the way to the event.

Mitt Romney later was heading to California for a weekend of fundraisers.

Wandering deer makes splash in Colorado pool

AP  Eyewitness NewsCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A wandering deer found himself in hot water after stepping on a pool cover and making a big splash in the backyard of a Colorado home.

Homeowner Scott Smith says he found the buck in his ground-level pool Sunday morning trying to wrestle his way out of the pool cover. Smith says he had no idea when the deer wandered onto the patio in the backyard of his Colorado Springs home.

KOAA-TV reports that firefighters built a ramp to help the animal out. Photos show the buck was coaxed out of the pool with rope to guide his way up the ramp.

The deer ran off as soon as he got out of the water, some four hours after he was discovered in the pool.

Prince Harry makes 1st appearance since scandal

AP  Eyewitness NewsLONDON -- Prince Harry has made his first public appearance since nude photos of him made international headlines.

A fully clothed Harry attended an awards ceremony Monday for the charity WellChild to celebrate the lives of seriously ill children and the doctors who care for them.

The prince, dressed in a smart gray suit, made no reference to the publication of the pictures, which captured him frolicking in the nude with an unidentified woman after what was alleged to have been a game of strip billiards in his Las Vegas hotel room.

The third in line to Britain's throne appeared relaxed as he gave a speech and chatted with the children at the ceremony, held at a London hotel.

Earlier Monday, a six-year-old boy who was due to be presented with an award by Harry had told ITV News that he would tell the prince: "I'm glad you've got your clothes on."

But the boy, who has acute leukemia, did not end up making the cheeky comment when he met the prince.

Harry himself inadvertently drew some laughs from the audience when he said that he was "not shy."

"All of you - children, families, nurses, doctors, carers, volunteers - are, quite frankly, too remarkable for me adequately to describe with mere words," he said. "But never one to be shy in coming forward, I'll give it a go."

The prince's nude photos went viral on the Internet, but most newspapers in Britain refrained from publishing them. Royal officials have said the photos were a breach of the prince's privacy.

Obama makes raid decision center of debate

President Obama will not officially commemorate the successful mission that killed Osama bin Laden one year ago today, according to the White House.

But his re-election campaign, eager to use the anniversary for political gain, has been trumpeting the 2011 decision to send a covert Navy SEALs team into Pakistan, thrusting it to the forefront of national political debate.

During a press conference at the White House on Monday, Obama defended politicization of the risky bin Laden mission as fair game.

"I said that I'd go after bin Laden if we had a clear shot at him, and I did," Obama told reporters in the East Room, reminding them of a campaign promise he had made in 2008.

"If there are others who have said one thing and now suggest they'd do something else, then I'd go ahead and let them explain it," he added -- an oblique reference to rival Mitt Romney.

In a 2007 interview, the former Massachusetts governor said, "It's not worth moving heaven and earth, spending billions of dollars just to capture one person."

He also called "ill-timed" and "ill-considered" then-candidate Obama's promise to approve unilateral strikes against terrorist targets inside Pakistan if presented with actionable intelligence.

In web ads and stump speeches, Team Obama has been driving home the contrast with the presumptive GOP nominee, making bin Laden's death a cornerstone of their pitch for a second term.

"In broad campaign terms, their strategy attempts to pull the rug out from under the Republicans on foreign policy," said Steve Hess, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and veteran of several presidential administrations.

"Historically, Republicans have won on the argument that Democrats are weak on national security, when in fact, as Obama's decision showed, they would often have done exactly the same thing," Hess said.

But in the case of bin Laden, Democratic strategists argue, Obama went further than a President Romney ever would have -- a claim that has sparked a fierce fight over a hypothetical what-might-have-been.

Former President Bill Clinton subtly raised questions about Romney in a new Obama campaign video supporting the raid, while Vice President Joe Biden has publicly tweaked Romney for policies that he says would have left General Motors dead and bin Laden alive.

"Quite frankly, Mitt Romney said it was a foolish thing to do a few years ago," senior Obama adviser Robert Gibbs said Sunday on "Meet the Press." "And, look, there's a difference in the roles they would play in commander-in-chief, and I certainly think that's fair game."

Romney said Monday that he would "of course" have authorized the strike on bin Laden's Abbotobad compound if presented with intelligence Obama received, and argued that "even Jimmy Carter would have given that order."

Romney's campaign also lashed out at the president for using "a good day for all Americans as a cheap political ploy."

"As I said at the time when the announcement was made about Osama bin Laden having been killed, I congratulated the president and the intelligence community as well of course SEAL Team 6," said Romney in an interview Tuesday on "CBS This Morning.

"I acknowledged the president's success and think he had every right to take credit for him having ordered that attack," he said. "At the same time I think it was very disappointing for the president to try and make this a political item by suggesting I wouldn't have ordered such a raid, of course I would have."

Obama's use of the bin Laden decision as weapon to attack Romney has drawn fire from the right and the left.

Arianna Huffington of the left-leaning Huffington Post said Monday that turning the bin Laden "assassination" into a campaign ad is "one of the most despicable things you can do."

Sen. John McCain, Obama's 2008 challenger and Romney surrogate, blasted the president, saying he should be ashamed.

"Shame on Barack Obama for diminishing the memory of September 11th and the killing of Osama bin Laden by turning it into a cheap political attack ad," McCain said last week. "This is the same President who once criticized Hillary Clinton for invoking bin Laden 'to score political points."

Family of missing Tucson girl makes desperate plea

See it on TV? Check here. TUCSON, Ariz. -- The parents of a 6-year-old girl who disappeared from her home over the weekend said Wednesday they will do anything to ensure her return.

Dressed in white T-shirts that read "Bring Isa Home," Becky and Sergio Celis pleaded in front of TV cameras for whoever has their "baby girl Isabel" to make their demands known.

"Just please, please, the person or persons who have Isabel, tell us your demands. Tell us what you want. We will do anything for her," Sergio Celis said while choking back tears.

The couple expressed gratitude to investigators and to people who have prayed for Isabel.

Surrounded by friends and volunteers who have been passing out fliers, Sergio Celis also promised that the search for his daughter would never end.

"We are looking for you, Isa. We love you and we miss you so much. We will never give up," he said.

The parents did not take questions from reporters who were gathered in a shopping center parking lot where police had established a command post.

This was the first time Isabel's parents spoke publicly since Isabel was reported missing Saturday. The first-grader's parents have told police they last saw her in her room Friday night and they awoke Saturday to find her missing. Police said a window was open with the screen pushed aside.

Tucson police have said they consider the case a suspicious disappearance and possible abduction.

Police Chief Roberto Villasenor said he still hopes to find Isabel alive.

Police said specially trained FBI profilers went through the family's home Tuesday to get a firsthand look inside and a better understanding of what the evidence looks like. Authorities would not elaborate on what that evidence was.

A reward being offered by the Pima County attorney's office for information about the case has grown to $30,000, thanks to contributions and promised donations.

Wahlberg makes controversial Flight 93 comment

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK -- Mark Wahlberg is a two time Oscar nominated actor with several big screens hits to his credit, but a comment he made about September 11th is not being viewed as his finest hour.

He made the comment in an article in the February issue of Men's Journal.

He was asked about the flight he was supposed to be on and he stated, "If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn't have went down like it did. There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, 'OK, we're going to land somewhere safely, don't worry.'"

That statement is not sitting well with the family members of some of the 9/11 victims.

"If you want to say something profound you should educate yourself more about what happened," said Carole O'Hare, a family member of a Flight 93 victim.

Carole O'Hare lost her 79-year-old mother when Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

"I personally don't like for people to use 9/11 in any kind of self motivating purpose. I think it's not particularly attractive," O'Hare said.

Wahlberg later issued an apology saying to speculate was "ridiculous to begin with." He said that to suggest he "would have done anything differently than the passengers on that plane was irresponsible."

Delta 747 makes emergency landing at Midway

See it on TV? Check here. AP  HONOLULU, Hawaii -- A Delta Air Lines 747 with nearly 380 passengers and crew made an emergency stop at the Midway Atoll wildlife refuge part of the way between Hawaii and Japan after the plane developed a crack in the cockpit windshield.

The airplane was flying from Honolulu to Osaka Thursday when pilots noticed the crack and landed at the former military base about 1,300 miles northwest of Oahu at about 5:40 p.m. Midway is home to about 1 million Laysan albatross seabirds.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which runs the refuge, said Friday that Delta kept the passengers on board until a second 747 arrived from Japan to fly the passengers to Osaka. The replacement plane left about 5 a.m. Friday, just before light and before the seabirds began to fly.

Pope makes rare mention of life under Nazis

See it on TV? Check here. AP  VATICAN CITY -- Pope Benedict XVI, who was forced to join the Hitler Youth as a child, has made a rare mention of life in Germany under the Nazis, calling it a "dark time."

The 84-year-old, German-born pontiff turned his thoughts to 70 years ago, a time "already marked by war" and in which Adolf Hitler "had already subjugated" one country after another, including Poland, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and France.

Benedict said "it looked like the continent was in the hands of this power, which put the future on Christianity in doubt."

Benedict was speaking during an audience Saturday at the Vatican with members of a German Catholic group in Regensburg, which he entered as a 14-year-old boy.

The pope's off-the-cuff remarks were reported by Vatican Radio.

Newark-bound Israeli jet makes emergency landing

See it on TV? Check here. AP  JERUSALEM -- Israeli rescue services say an El Al jet with 260 passengers and crippled landing gear has safely made an emergency landing at Israel's international airport.

Rescue services spokesman Zaki Heller says the jet made a successful landing at dawn Monday as dozens of medical crews stood by and local hospitals were put on alert.

Earlier, media reported that the Boeing 777 had been en route to Newark, New Jersey, when the problem was discovered and it was forced to turn back. The jet dumped its fuel into the Mediterranean in preparation for the landing.

Heller said more than 70 rescue crews were waiting at the airport outside Tel Aviv, where a state of emergency had been declared. (Copyright ©2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
