Ann Romney's plane makes emergency landing

AP  Eyewitness NewsDENVER -- A plane carrying Ann Romney, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's wife, made an emergency landing Friday afternoon after smoke filled the cabin. No injuries were reported.

An apparent electrical fire forced the detour on the flight from Omaha, Neb., to Los Angeles, campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said. The candidate and his wife spoke immediately after the incident, said Saul, who shared photographs on Twitter of firefighters boarding the private jet.

Rick Gorka, a spokesman traveling with Mitt Romney, said Mrs. Romney told her husband that everyone was fine.

Secret Service spokesman Max Milien in Washington said there were no injuries on the plane and everyone deplaned after the 2:25 p.m. local time landing. He declined to provide other details.

Romney was in Nevada, appearing at a fundraiser and rally on Friday. He did not mention the incident during a rally, but aides said he spoke to his wife from a car on the way to the event.

Mitt Romney later was heading to California for a weekend of fundraisers.

Landing gear door falls on Washington neighborhood

AP  Eyewitness NewsKENT, Wash. -- The Federal Aviation Administration confirms that a piece of metal that fell to the ground in a Kent, Wash., neighborhood was part of a Boeing 767's landing gear door.

Witnesses say the refrigerator-size panel hit the ground and skipped about 30 feet before stopping in a street Friday morning. No one in the neighborhood about 15 miles south of Seattle was hurt.

Neighbors say a cargo jet flew low over the area at about the same time the part came down.

Photos on news station KOMO's website show part of an identification plate on the object that has the word "aircraft" along with a serial number.

FAA officials aren't saying if they've located the plane that the part came from.

FAA probing JetBlue emergency landing

AP  Eyewitness NewsLAS VEGAS -- Federal aviation officials are investigating the emergency landing in Las Vegas last weekend of a New York-bound aircraft that circled for almost four hours after the pilot reported a hydraulic system failure.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said Thursday that investigators are looking at what happened on JetBlue Flight 194 before it returned safely Sunday to its point of origin at McCarran International Airport.

A JetBlue statement says the aircraft departed at 3:45 p.m. for John F. Kennedy International Airport with 150 passengers and five crew members aboard before the captain declared an emergency after losing one of three hydraulic systems.

The A320 aircraft used backup hydraulics, burned fuel, and landed safely at McCarran.

JetBlue says a replacement aircraft flew the passengers overnight to New York, and they received refunds.

Thousands of birds make crash landing in Utah

AP  Eyewitness NewsST. GEORGE, Utah -- Crews are cleaning up thousands of migratory birds that made a crash landing in southern Utah after apparently mistaking a Walmart parking lot and other areas as bodies of water.

Teresa Griffin of the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources tells the Spectrum (http://bit.ly/rYpQbJ ) that employees have been driving around the St. George area picking up the dead or injured birds. People are also dropping off birds at the department's office.

Officials say storm clouds above city lights Monday night probably confused thousands of grebes, which are a duck-like aquatic bird that migrates south for the winter. Thousands of the birds were killed, but more than 2,000 had been rescued by Tuesday evening.

The survivors were released into Washington County bodies of water, including Stratton Pond near Hurricane.

Emergency plane landing at Fla. airport

AP  WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A JetBlue plane traveling from Fort Lauderdale to New York has made an emergency landing at Palm Beach International Airport.

Aviation officials say the Airbus A320 plane left Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport late Thursday morning. A short time later, a pilot reported a speed indicator problem and safely landed at PBIA, about 50 miles north of where it took off.

Maintenance crews were inspecting the plane Thursday afternoon.

JetBlue says the 134 customers on Flight 18 were moved to another plane, which was scheduled to leave PBIA around 5:30 p.m. and arrive at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York several hours later. (Copyright ©2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) Get more New York News »

Delta 747 makes emergency landing at Midway

See it on TV? Check here. AP  HONOLULU, Hawaii -- A Delta Air Lines 747 with nearly 380 passengers and crew made an emergency stop at the Midway Atoll wildlife refuge part of the way between Hawaii and Japan after the plane developed a crack in the cockpit windshield.

The airplane was flying from Honolulu to Osaka Thursday when pilots noticed the crack and landed at the former military base about 1,300 miles northwest of Oahu at about 5:40 p.m. Midway is home to about 1 million Laysan albatross seabirds.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which runs the refuge, said Friday that Delta kept the passengers on board until a second 747 arrived from Japan to fly the passengers to Osaka. The replacement plane left about 5 a.m. Friday, just before light and before the seabirds began to fly.

Troubled Delta landing in Atlanta; 4 hurt

See it on TV? Check here.AP  ATLANTA -- The landing gear of a Delta Air Lines jet apparently caught fire during a rough landing Saturday afternoon at Atlanta's main airport, but the flight's approximately 50 passengers and crew were evacuated safely, authorities said.

Four people suffered minor injuries that did not require hospitalization, Atlanta city fire officials said. Passengers were evacuated through the rear stairs. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire with foam spray.

There were conflicting accounts as to what caused the trouble for Delta flight 2284 from Pittsburgh, which landed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport at around 4:18 p.m.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Kathleen Bergen said the MD-88 jet suffered either a blown tire, a locked-up brake or perhaps both, which caused a fire.

Fire officials initially said the fire was in the plane's right engine, then said it was actually in landing gear toward the back of the plane. Crews had the blaze extinguished less than a minute after they arrived, Atlanta Fire Department Capt. Jolyon Bundrige said.

Delta spokeswoman Leslie Parker said late Saturday afternoon that she did not know if there was a fire on the plane and attributed the problem to an overheated brake. She was unaware of any injuries. The passengers on the plane were transported by bus to the airport terminal.

"There was obviously smoke," Parker said. "The plane will be taken out of service and evaluated by maintenance and they'll be able to determine exactly what happened."

The damaged plane was taken off the runway and did not cause flight delays, airport spokesman John Kennedy said.

Newark-bound Israeli jet makes emergency landing

See it on TV? Check here. AP  JERUSALEM -- Israeli rescue services say an El Al jet with 260 passengers and crippled landing gear has safely made an emergency landing at Israel's international airport.

Rescue services spokesman Zaki Heller says the jet made a successful landing at dawn Monday as dozens of medical crews stood by and local hospitals were put on alert.

Earlier, media reported that the Boeing 777 had been en route to Newark, New Jersey, when the problem was discovered and it was forced to turn back. The jet dumped its fuel into the Mediterranean in preparation for the landing.

Heller said more than 70 rescue crews were waiting at the airport outside Tel Aviv, where a state of emergency had been declared. (Copyright ©2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
