Biden recalls pain after death of wife, daughter

AP  Eyewitness NewsWASHINGTON -- Visibly pained, Vice President Joe Biden recalls the wrenching sorrow of losing his first wife and his daughter to a car accident in 1972.

Biden tells families of fallen soldiers that the grief was such that he understood why some people contemplate suicide. But he says that in time the ache becomes more controllable. He credits his turnabout to meeting and later marrying his wife Jill.

Biden spoke Friday at the 18th annual TAPS National Military Survivor Seminar and Good Grief Camp in Arlington, Va.

He told families at the event that a day will come when the thought of a son or daughter, or husband or wife, in his words, "brings a smile to your lips before it brings a tear to your eye."

Chrysler recalls 242,000 Ram pickup trucks

AP  By TOM KRISHERDETROIT -- Chrysler is recalling nearly 250,000 Ram pickups because a bad part in the steering system can cause drivers to lose control of the truck.

The Ram is Chrysler's top-selling vehicle. The recall covers 242,780 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups from the 2008 to 2011 model years.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Wednesday on its website that a part near the left front wheel can fracture, and potentially cause crashes.

The problem happens mainly at low speeds when drivers are making tight turns. Chrysler says drivers have reported a few minor crashes and one minor injury.

Affected models include 2008-2011 Ram 2500 and 3500 four-wheel-drive pickups and 2008-2011 Ram 3500 two-wheel-drive chassis cabs made from Feb. 14, 2008 through March 28, 2011.

Also affected are 2008 Ram 1500 mega cab four-wheel-drive models made from Feb. 14, 2008 through Aug. 15, 2008.

In addition, Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks made from the 2003 through 2008 model years also could be recalled if the same part was replaced by mechanics during regular service.

Chrysler Group LLC sold more than 734,000 Ram pickups from 2008 through June of 2011, according to Autodata Corp. The 1500 is the standard Ram, while the 2500 and 3500 are models designed for heavier duties.

Chrysler dealers will inspect the trucks and replace the left outer tie rod and align the wheels for free if necessary.

The company has not determined yet when it will notify owners.

Affected owners can contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236.

Pet food company recalls some pig ears chews

See it on TV? Check here. AP  Eyewitness NewsVERNON, Conn. -- A Connecticut pet food company is recalling some boxes of its pig ears chews because of a possible salmonella risk.

Vernon-based Bravo! said Friday the voluntary recall involves 50-count bulk oven-roasted Pig Ears that were shipped to distributors and retailers on the East and West coasts between Jan. 1 and Feb. 28. The company said the Washington State Department of Agriculture discovered the bacteria during routine sampling.

Bravo! says pets with salmonella infections may have symptoms ranging from decreased appetite and energy to bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Humans could get the infections from handling contaminated pet products.

The company says people are urged to return the affected products for a refund. More details are available on its website, http://www.bravorawdiet.com/, or at its toll-free number, 1-866-922-9222. (Copyright ©2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

Schumer targets rental car recalls

AP  By MICHAEL GORMLEY Association PressALBANY, N.Y. -- U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer of New York said he will introduce a bill to stop car rental agencies from renting automobiles that are under recalls for problems that aren't yet fixed.

The industry this month proposed a two-tiered system in which cars would be kept off the road if the recall involved serious safety issues. Recalls considered less serious would be fixed as soon as possible, but the cars wouldn't be "grounded" until then, under the proposal by the American Car Rental Association.

"Rental car agencies appear more interested in reaping profit by keeping recalled vehicles on the road then they do with ensuring the safety of the individuals and families who are driving their cars," Schumer said before his announcement Monday.

Schumer said the law is needed because of serious crashes in recent years involving rental cars under recalls. He said car rental agencies must be held to the same standard as automobile dealerships that don't lease cars for longer terms until a problem identified in a recall is fixed.

The American Car Rental Association said its two-tiered system would make sure unsafe cars aren't rented but also wouldn't keep cars off the road unnecessarily. The association said neither manufacturers nor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives clear direction on which recalls pose a serious risk that must be fixed before a car can be operated.

"Currently all vehicle owners, including rental companies, must decide whether to continue to operate vehicles subject to a recall based on the information provided by the manufacturer and NHTSA in the recall notice," the association said on its website.

Schumer said all recalled vehicles should be off the road until they're fixed.

"The latest proposal by car rental companies to create a vague double-standard that defines some recalled cars as safe and others as dangerous allows these companies to shirk their responsibility to consumers' safety," Schumer said.

Schumer said a consumer who rents a car, unlike a private owner, won't be notified that the car is under recall.

An association spokesman didn't respond to a request for comment Sunday.

"We can't determine the significance of a recall and whether a vehicle is no longer safe to operate or whether it can continue to operate and then should simply be brought in for service at some point in time," the association's Bob Barton told The New York times in April in lobbying for a two-tier system.

"We simply want the manufacturers to instruct us when a vehicle needs to be grounded and we will absolutely comply," Barton said.
