Zimmerman case: Should charges be dropped?

Two prominent U.S. lawyers are among the skeptics questioning whether evidence in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin supports the second-degree murder charge against George Zimmerman, given the confessed shooter's apparent injuries and freshly released eyewitness accounts.

"There is no second-degree murder evidence in this case," Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz said. "It's a very close case."

Details released in the past week add to the picture of what might have transpired on that rainy Feb. 26 before Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain in the Sanford, Fla., community where Martin, 17, was staying with his father's fiancee, shot the teen dead.

Previously unknown particulars, including the scrape on Martin's knuckle and photos of Zimmerman's battered and swollen face -- which were taken moments after he shot and killed Martin in what he says was self defense -- coupled with eyewitness accounts that back up Zimmerman's story, suggest for some that the prosecutor overreached.

"I'd rather play the defense than the prosecutor, because there's no way you get a murder-two conviction," journalist-attorney Geraldo Rivera said on Fox News' "The O'Reilly Factor" last week.

Zimmerman, 28, whose father is white and mother Hispanic, had volunteered for the neighborhood watch committee. He has said that he shot Martin, an African-American, in self-defense after the teen knocked him to the ground, banged his head against the ground and went for Zimmerman's gun.

The release of evidence by the prosecution Thursday also included potentially damning eyewitness accounts of the tussle between the two. One man at the scene told police he saw Martin on top of Zimmerman, pummeling him mixed martial arts-style.

With more of the prosecution's evidence now public, legal experts like Dershowitz are blaming what they're already calling "the failure" of this racially charged case on Special Prosecutor Angela Corey.

"If there are demonstrations, the finger of responsibility will point directly at the prosecutor," Dershowitz said.

Corey, the state attorney in Florida's Fourth Judicial Circuit Court, was assigned to the case by Florida Gov. Rick Scott nearly a month after the shooting. Corey said this weekend that evidence released so far is not the sum total of her case.

"What the general public has to remember and the media has to remember is that there is a lot we cannot release by law," Corey said.

Zimmerman's attorney Mark O'Mara apparently agrees with Corey.

"[It is] way too early to tell," he said. "That's me not only commenting on evidence, but the weight of all the evidence. And I don't even have all the evidence."

One key to the case is which of the two men instigated the clash that left Martin dead. The prosecution says Zimmerman initiated the altercation when he "profiled" Martin that night, and then got out of his car to follow him. In the newly released documents, lead homicide officer on the case, Chris Serino of the Sanford Police Department, called the shooting "avoidable" had Zimmerman remained in his vehicle.

What has yet to be seen are two main pieces of evidence: Zimmerman's statement on the night of the incident, and his reenactment of the events of that night, which could prove vital when and if the case is heard in court.

Should US Pay Off Debt to Nations Engaging in Unethical Currency Manipulation and Trade Tariffs?

It has been stated that the US should not be too eager to pay off its debt to nations, which are manipulating their currencies, stealing intellectual property, engaging in unfair trade practices, or denying human rights violations. Rather it has been stated that it's much better to owe such debt in order to keep such a nation at bay. Okay, so let's hypothetically consider this thought shall we?

Of course, if a nation pays off their debt to another, their credit rating goes up. If that former debt holding nation is then disallowed to buy more debt from the first nation, they must then invest in their own currency and nation, at which point they cannot play their currency. If they choose to buy Euros, then Europe has the problem.

A nation which "cheats" in the game should be disbarred from playing, and if the WTO will not act, then the strongest nations must, otherwise the manipulating nation challenges all-world economies and messes up real trade flows. If a debtor nation pays off their debt and only owes itself, then the debt is held in large part by the people, the people will then take more care and respect when voting, thus unnecessary spending.

As a debtor nation pays off their debt their currency is more valuable, and it will attract investment, investment spurs on the economy, thus an increase in wealth, economics, and perhaps the raising of interest rates to control the growth. A raise in interest rates and more stability increases investment.

If all this occurred simultaneously with an "exact reciprocation" of trade tariffs to the former debt-holding nation, plus 10% to be given to the first nation's military, the only real authorized use of the government, then everything is brought back into check, without collapse.

In doing so the currency manipulating former debt holder will bitch and moan and cause a fit, perhaps place additional tariffs in a trade war, so be it, as first nation's trade tariffs are "exactly reciprocated" and that manipulating nation will see that their games are over and come back into check.

With all that money and nothing to do with it, having been paid back, that formerly manipulating nation will use it to lend out, and since that nation's former loans are going bad at a tremendous rate, they will soon understand how the game is played in the real world. Without control, of the first nation's finances, it is out of control, allowing any road to take them nowhere and fast.

The first nation needs to slide the ball back into the center, give it a little rudder, and add some power, we've had enough of this spin, it is time to re-gain some altitude. Failure to make a correction for fear that our Global Corporate Conglomerates might be nationalized or attacked by a dishonest nation is ridiculous, as they either will or won't either way, either now or later, or prior to a war. Sacrificing the first nation for short term gains in a shaky emerging market (albeit a future superpower) that will soon hit the fan, isn't wise anyway.

As the EU, Emerging Super Power, and US all move forward hoping to be the last to fall, and all trying to hang on to somewhat similar situations albeit, different causes, and potential outcomes - we also need to live on the same planet, and we all must have the resources, economic strength, and social stability to do it. We must look after our own interests first, and second work to help our neighbors stabilize their situations, if and when we can.

Global Leadership comes with lots of responsibility, so we need to show we accept that, and then do what's right, and right the wrongs of those misbehaving emerging super powers which clearly goes out of its way to stick us with a sharp blade. While we can forgive their naiveté, it cannot go unpunished, and all those power brokers must understand; if there is to be a One World Order, it must be run by the nation with the highest ethical standards, that nation is the US, no other nation has shown the leadership or put their money, military, young men, and focus where their mouth is.

Political correctness, and socialist plays in world media, can never be a reason to make a move. Only reality, and a true understanding of human nature can be considered, the nonsense cannot be allowed to run this planet, or the whole thing will implode into a WWIII together. That is unacceptable.
